It started out with Yankees MVP candidate and second baseman Robinson Cano. In the first inning with the bases loaded, Cano smoked a grand slam home run. He wasn’t the only one. Cano’s first-inning homer was followed by Russell Martin’s grand slam in the sixth inning. By the time Curtis Granderson had hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, the game had gone from a back-and-forth slugfest to a laugher. The New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics 22-9 last night, thanks to a record-setting three grand slams in a single game.
In case the box score didn’t give it away, this was a pretty remarkable game for New York. The team drew a season high 13 walks, including 7 in the seventh inning. Martin, who was playing catcher for the Yankees, had a career-high six RBIs on a night in which he went 5-5, getting the most hits by a Yankees catcher since 1959. Martin had two singles, a double, a walk, a solo home run, and his grand slam. Granderson’s grand slam pushes him over 100 RBIs for a season (he’s got 103) for the first time in his career. And, for the first time since the early 1990’s, Yankees DH and former catcher Jorge Posada played second base. It seems like the only Yankee not to smack a homer last night was Mr. 600, A-Rod.
In true criminal fashion, the Yankees were merciless last night. Then again, when you give up 9 runs, you have to keep hitting because you never know when your pitching is going to implode (thanks, Phil Hughes).
