HP’s stated goal for the TouchPad was a simple one. Hewlitt-Packard knew they would not be able to topple Apple from its perch as the king of the tablet computer market, so HP just wanted one thing: to be second behind the iPad. Amazingly, HP has now taken that second place at the market, thanks to a recently-killed tablet line and tablet computer operating system. HP’s TouchPad has been more successful in death than it was in life, and it’s not quite done yet. HP is going to fire up the assembly lines for one last production run of TouchPads in an attempt to meet the incredible demand for the product.
“We have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand,” HP officials have said. “We don’t know exactly when these units will be available or how many we’ll get, and we can’t promise we’ll have enough for everyone. We do know that it will be at least a few weeks before you can purchase.”
HP has estimated that the last run of TouchPads might be ready by the end of October, just in time for the holiday buying season. Can you imagine? A Black Friday TouchPad blowout would make Saturday’s TouchPad buying frenzy look like a lazy Sunday at the mall!
It seems a bit counter intuitive to continue to lose $200+ per TouchPad, but look at it this way. A popular HP TouchPad allows HP to get rid of warehouses full of TouchPad parts. More importantly, should HP sell the WebOS operating system to someone, that company instantly buys a huge market share for itself, not to mention great publicity for all involved.
