When Little Luke, AKA Nevin Shapiro, started turning over information to the NCAA regarding Miami University’s dozens of serious NCAA violations, it looked very bad for the various sports programs at The U. Indeed, it may still be bad, but the first wave of punishments has rolled in and it’s not as bad as it could have been. Eight Miami Hurricanes will be suspended for one to six games, and twelve total ‘Canes will be forced to make restitution payments.
Here’s the list of players being punished, and their suspensions: Olivier Vernon, six games; Ray Ray Armstrong and Dyron Dye, four games; Jacory Harris, Sean Spence, Travis Benjamin, Marcus Forston, and Adewale Ojomo will all miss one game. Those eight players, plus at least four others, will also be forced to repay for their ill-gotten benefits before they can play (which means they’ll probably take money from another booster to pay off the money they took from Nevin Shapiro, but that’s beside the point).
“I think it was probably fair,” Miami coach Al Golden told The Associated Press Tuesday night. “Clearly, whatever transpired, it wasn’t as over-the-top as everybody was initially reporting and all of those things. The NCAA and the university felt there was mistakes made … and I’ve accepted that. And now we’re moving forward.”
The players and university still face more potential punishment from the NCAA, but it appears the rumors of the death penalty are greatly exaggerated. Miami is obviously going to get off easy… again… and get away with serious NCAA violations with no real punishment… again. The only thing these football factories understand is money. Not losing wins, not losing scholarships, and not sanctions… it’s money. If you want to enforce the rules, you need to cost Miami cash, which is why it won’t happen.
