Sebastian Janikowski is built like a lineman, but kicks like a mule.
When it comes to kicking a football between a pair of uprights, there aren’t many people better than Sebastian Janikowski. The Poland-born placekicker for the Oakland Raiders has a penchant for kicking the ball for miles, and last night in the thin air of Denver, Colorado, he kicked himself into a spot in the record books. Sebastian Janikowski tied an NFL record with a 63-yard field goal last night, joining New Orleans Saints Tom Dempsey (1970) and the Denver Broncos Jason Elam (2000) in the record books with the longest field goal in NFL history. Even better, Oakland beat Denver 23-20 in the second game of the night.
Meanwhile, in the first game of the Monday Night Football double-header last night, the New England Patriots also decided they needed to start the season off with a bang during a 38-24 besting of the Miami Dolphins in South Beach last night. The Dolphins gave up possession on New England’s 1 yard line after failing to score a touchdown; New England quarterback Tom Brady responded by completing a simple pass that wide receiver Wes Welker took all the way to the house from the 1 yard out. That was the 13th time in NFL history that a play went 99 yards for a score.
We’re pretty used to quarterbacks setting records, but to see kickers make positive contributions, rather than negative ones? That’s always a plus.
