Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins... yea or nay?
Johnny Depp is a busy, busy man. When he’s not busy freeing the West Memphis 3, visiting school children as Captain Jack Sparrow, and being Hunter S. Thompson, he’s busy making movies. He makes a lot of movies, and the person he loves working with more than anyone else is the maestro of all things weird and Gothic, Tim Burton. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s latest collaboration is a big-screen version of the 1970’s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. The first pictures of Depp as Barnabas Collins have been leaked, and the results are… pretty weird.
Don’t mistake me, I really want this to be great. I want it to spark interest in the original Dark Shadows and its various reiterations, I want the movie on its own to be awesome, and I want the best from every Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration every time they get together. That said, the recent results have been pretty disappointing, to put it mildly. The last thing I want is to see Johnny Depp doing another Michael Jackson impression, but that’s the first thing I get when I look at this makeup.
“”We’re changing it a little bit,” Tim Burton told MTV. “I wouldn’t do it if it felt like it was just doing the same thing. For me, it’s about trying to go back to the original drawings and kind of capture that spirit a little bit more of what the drawings are. It feels different even though it’s a similar story, but we’re kind of expanding it a bit.”
I’ll have to ask my Dark Shadows fan friends what they think about this new development.
