A wild ginger in her natural habitat.
Is it a case of anti-ginger discrimination? Are redheads just too sexy to donate sperm at the world’s largest sperm bank? Is the legend of Good King Henry simply too much for the average single mother or lesbian couple too much to live up to? Well, no. As it turns out, there’s not a huge demand for red-headed sperm donors, except in Ireland, and a recent peak in donation has left Denmark’s Cryos with an excess of red-headed semen.
“There are too many redheads in relation to demand,” Cryos director Ole Schou told told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. “I do not think you choose a redhead, unless the partner – for example, the sterile male – has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads. And that’s perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case.”
Cryos provides semen to women and infertile couples in 65 different countries. According to Schou, their highest-demand sample is of a male with dark hair and dark eyes, though most couples try to match their partner with their donor.
