Italy has a problem with children who simply refuse to leave the nest. Dubbed “mammone,” or mama’s boy, they are young Italian males who simply do not grow up and leave the house. An estimated 48 percent of Italians between the ages of 18 and 39 still live at home, but one family’s lawsuit may bring that problem to an end. A pair of elderly parents are sueing their 41-year-old son in an attempt to make him leave the house.
“We can no longer go on like this. My wife has developed stress-related problems and she’s been in hospital recently. He has a good job but he continues to live at home and wants his clothes washed and ironed and his meals cooked for him,” said a statement issued by the couple through their lawyer, Andrea Campi. “He never wants to leave.”
The couple and their son, who live in Mestre, a town near Venice, were not named in the lawsuit. The son has been given 10 days to find an apartment or house and leave his parents’ home, or legal eviction proceedings will start. Let’s just hope this eviction doesn’t lead to violence and cannon fire.
