Two different divisions in baseball, but the stories are the same. On the last day of the season, two teams went from front-runners to also-rans in the blink of an eye, completing a pair of historic collapses the likes of which Major League Baseball has not seen in years. In the American League, the Boston Red Sox lost the wild card to the Tampa Bay Rays after a Boston loss and a Tampa miracle comeback. Meanwhile, in the National League, the Atlanta Braves lost the wild card to the St. Louis Cardinals, choking away a 10.5 game lead.
The amazing thing about this pair of losses? They both fumbled away the last game of the season, thereby losing a chance at the post-season via a one-game playoff. If Atlanta holds their lead, they’ve got a puncher’s chance against St. Louis. If Boston doesn’t lose to the woeful Baltimore Orioles or the Tampa Bay Rays don’t beat the New York Yankees, they’ve got the wild card. The conditions had to be perfect for this pair of losses to actually happen, and here we are.
Baseball is a really funny game.
