A parking ticket for the chief's wife.
They say that power corrupts, but don’t tell that to Vincent Caruso. Caruso is the Chief of Police in Lodi, New Jersey, and if you hear him tell it, he’s not any more above the law than anyone else. In fact, he may be even more under the law than others, and it’s of his own doing. When a police officer told him that his wife Paula’s car was one in a line of cars double parked outside of an elementary school, Chief Caruso told the officer to give Paula a ticket. You’re reading that right, the police chief had his own wife given a $54 ticket.
“She’s amazing. She’s very busy. She has three kids under the age of five. She’s constantly running around all day,” said Chief Caruso of his wife Paula, who drives their four children–ages 2, 4, 5, and 13–to school every week day. “I didn’t want her to get any special treatment because of who she is.”
The amazing thing is, she WAS given special treatment because of who she is, and it was special HARSH treatment. The other people double-parked in front of the school were given warnings, but Ms. Caruso was given an actual ticket. Ms. Caruso does not wish to comment on her ticket; Mr. Caruso says the fine has been paid in full.
