After all this news of death today, let’s have some news of a second life. WebOS and HP’s lamented TouchPad may be gone-ish, but they’re definitely not forgotten by the Android community. One of the goals was to update the TouchPad with Android, and someone has finally flashed a version of Android onto the HP TouchPad. However, it’s not CyanogenMod, the Android for WebOS development team that’s been running since, oh, five minutes after the HP TouchPad liquidation sale. It’s from a Chinese developer who goes by the name of Chompers, who released a test IPK of Android on WebOS via the PreCentral Forums. It’s captured on video for all the nonbelievers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i9JVherUlkNow, this is only version 0.0.1, so basically nothing works and it is very, very buggy. Basically, Chompers installed Android as an app onto the TouchPad, then booted it from there. None of Android’s internal features work, so it’s not exactly a dual-boot, but hey, it’s a start. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single hack, as the kids say. Here’s hoping someone gets a functional dual boot for the TouchPad up and running soon, if only to see what the TouchPad can do with a fresh OS.
