So all that talk about how Fox was ready to walk away from The Simpsons and start raking in billions of dollars in distribution and syndication money while the actors were willing to walk away unless they got a percentage of the back end of the show, like the producers and everyone else gets? All that was just talk. After some terse and oftentimes public negotiations, Fox has renewed The Simpsons for two more seasons. Details of the contracts were not released.
Well, that certainly didn’t take long, did it? I understand that the show is losing viewers, down from 12 million to 7 million over the last 10 years, but it’s also one of the most popular programs on television around the world. The Simpsons is broadcast in 50 languages throughout 100 countries and still moves millions in merchandise; even with a pay cut, I guarantee you the voice actors are still making millions of dollars for their work, so I’m not sure how either side could say the economics for the show weren’t right. That seems a bit spurious to me.
As Fox said in their press release, “In the words of Homer Simpson, ‘Woo hoo!’.” The show will get its landmark 25th season and everyone seems relatively content with the new deal. Now it’s up to the writers to make the show fresh again.
