It’s not often that someone leaves a wildly successful band to embark on a second career, but Mikey Welch did. Ten years ago, Mikey Welch left the band Weezer to retire to his home in South Burlington, Vermont, to become an artist. Welch promptly went from being a successful musician to a successful artist, and seemed to enjoy his life out of the spotlight. Unfortunately, that life is over. Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welch was found dead at the Raffaello Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. He is believed to have died from a drug overdose.
Welch was in Chicago to see Weezer play at the annual RiotFest, a gathering of punk and rock bands. He was not expected to join the band. He left the group in 2001, after they recorded the Green Album and began on a comeback that led to tie-ins like the Weezer snuggie, viral video fame, and a recent scary bus crash. The RiotFest appearance is scheduled to continue on as scheduled, but hopefully there’ll be some sort of included Welch memorial during the show.
