The Denver Broncos were down 16 points to the San Diego Chargers in the third quarter when John Fox inserted Tim Tebow into the game. Tebow ran for one touchdown and threw for another, dragging Denver back from the dead and bringing the team to within a last-second end-zone pass of victory, only to fall short. San Diego beat Denver 29-24, but today everyone’s talking about Tim Tebow’s play. He was rusty, only going 4-10 for 79 yards and a touchdown while running 6 times for 38 yards and another score. However, he was much better than Kyle Orton’s 6-13 for 34 yards with one interception. Should it be Tebow time in Denver?
I think it should be. There’s a reason former coach Josh McDaniels picked the national championship-winning Florida Gators quarterback in the first round. There’s a reason former Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer built an offense around Tebow. If you play to his strengths, you’ve got a great quarterback on your hands. The NFL is full of coaches, such as Denver coach John Fox, who are not willing to use their best players in ways that allow them to be successful.
Running quarterbacks can win in the NFL, if you know how to use them. Look at Randall Cunningham. Look at Steve Young. Look at Roger Staubach. Look at current quarterbacks like Cameron Newton and Michael Vick. Newton and Vick are both mediocre throwing quarterbacks with weird deliveries. Both run way too much. Yet both are very successful thus far in their NFL careers because they’ve got coaches who use their strengths. If Newton and Vick can do it, so can Tebow.
