Stephen Garcia, either throwing a pass or about to try to drink a football.
The Ol’ Ball Coach has a new man under center in South Carolina. Troubled former starting quarterback Stephen Garcia has been dismissed from the University of South Carolina after getting caught drinking. Garcia, who is immensely talented but also immensely troubled, has been suspended from the Gamecocks squad five times, including twice this spring alone. After getting one last last chance, Garcia promptly blew it by partying, as college students are wont to do.
“Being a student-athlete at the University of South Carolina is a privilege, not a right,” said South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman in a statement, “and we remind all of our student-athletes that there are consequences for their actions. For Stephen to return to and remain with the football squad this fall, we agreed on several established guidelines. Unfortunately, he has not been able to abide by those guidelines and has therefore forfeited his position on the roster. We wish him the best of luck as he moves forward in life.”
The man now slinging the football for Steve Spurrier’s vaunted passing attack is sophomore Connor Shaw. During last Saturday’s game versus UK, Shaw threw for 311 yards and 4 touchdowns in his first start as Garcia’s replacement. Garcia, who has been struggling this season after winning the SEC East last season, will officially be looking for a new place to matriculate (as if he even cares). Maybe TAMU will need a new drunk quarterback for their SEC debut?
