The Avengers, assembled (with Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon)

When it comes to super hero teams, nobody does it quite as well or as often as Marvel.  Disney’s newest subsidiary has also become one of Hollywood’s most powerful movie studios, turning its army of properties, mutants, and costumed heroes into big-budget blockbuster after big-budget blockbuster, with a surprising amount of success.  Joss Whedon might not be in control of Buffy anymore, but he’s got his hands full with the ultimate super hero team, The Avengers.  The full trailer for The Avengers has been released, and it looks pretty freaking awesome.

The Avengers is a group of costumed heroes assembled by SHIELD director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson in his old Shaft outfit) for the purpose of defending the planet from threats too large for one man or one government alone to stop.  Tony Stark AKA Iron Man, is paired with Thor, Captain America AKA Steve Rogers, and the group’s wildest wild card, The Incredible Hulk AKA Bruce Banner.  That’s right kids, it’s Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo together in the same super hero movie, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson (as Black Widow), and Jeremy Renner (as Hawkeye/Clint Barton).

The movie won’t be released until Summer 2012, but forgive me if I’m already kind of excited by this idea.  Just the fact that all the precursor movies were successful enough to warrant this thrills the comic book nerd in me.  Here’s hoping we get a whole epic Marvelverse without Disney meddling.
