A pile of iOS-powered gadgets.
When it comes to upgrading something as important as an operating system, allow me to give you some friendly, unprofessional advice: don’t upgrade on launch day. Yesterday, Apple launched iOS 5 to the public, and thus, the entire day was spent taxing Apple’s servers while various iDevices, like the iPad and iPhone, tried in vain to download their new operating system. The iOS 5 updating process caused many, many headaches.
The thing is, zero day updating is always a crapshoot. You never know if A) you’ll actually get in to do it and B) if there won’t be problems with the operating system when you do upgrade. Anyone interested in iOS5 needs to remember to back their iDevice up before updating the operating system, because you never known when an incompatible app is going to brick your tablet or smartphone.
This is why I never update my operating system on the first day of release. You never really know what a patch or upgrade is going to do. If you wait a day or a week or so, you’ll know what to expect. Otherwise, for full-boat OS upgrades, I just buy or find a new system with it installed on and call it a day. If you want an iPhone 4S anyway, just wait and get one with iOS 5 installed.
