As a former professional football player, former quarterback and current coach Jim Harbaugh is a very physical, very excitable guy. That hasn’t changed, even years after he left the league and took over as the coach for the surging San Francisco 49ers. After the 49ers stormed back in the 4th quarter to defeat the previously unbeaten Detroit Lions 25-19, Harbaugh–who coaches the 49ers–and Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz got into a physical altercation at the end of the game following a “hard handshake.”
“I was just really revved up, and it’s totally on me. I shook his hand too hard. I mean, I really went in and it was a strong kind of a slap, grab handshake. It was kind of like the same as I’ve been doing with (some 49ers players). So, that was on me.” Harbaugh later added, “I am very emotional about the outcome, the way our players played. Hopefully, you can understand that. We were working with a group of guys, you’re on a team; you’re trying to do something special. To see your guys go out and perform that way, yeah, you do get emotional. It fires me up; it fires me up a lot. … I’m not going to apologize for that. If that offends you or anyone else, so be it.”
Listen, Detroit is a tough town. RoboCop was born in Detroit; if a hard slap on the back and a vigorous handshake offends you, then maybe you’re not Detroit tough. Jim Schwartz is a great coach, but he overreacted in this case; yes, Harbaugh was too rough in his post-game greeting, but when you beat an undefeated team, you have to be excited. If you want to dictate the post-game handshake, just win the game. Causing a near-riot after the game isn’t going to help your team rebound after a hard-fought loss.
