When Carson Palmer got up yesterday, he was a retired NFL quarterback. He wasn’t officially retired; he was still drawing checks from Cincinnati owner Mike Brown, but he wasn’t going to play any time soon. He wanted out of Cincinnati, where the Bengals have only had two winning seasons in the last 20 years. Bengals owner Mike Brown does not give in when players tell him to trade him. Fortunately for Palmer and Brown, the stalemate was rendered moot by a generous offer from the Oakland Raiders. Carson Palmer is now Oakland’s quarterback, reuniting Palmer with former Bengals wide receiver coach Hue Jackson (who also recruited Palmer to USC).
“This guy can play and he knows how to play the game and he knows how to elevate the players around him,” said Raiders coach Hue Jackson, who further described Palmer as the kind of strong-armed, mobile quarterback Al Davis would have coveted. “There’s no question you go on offense as good as your quarterback is. I think he’s one of the best and that’s why he’s on this football team now. I didn’t bring him here because he was just a guy sitting out there. I brought him here because I think he can help this team win a championship.”
Cincinnati is hoping Palmer does just that in Oakland. According to the terms of the trade, the Bengals get Oakland’s first-round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional pick in 2013; if Oakland makes an AFC championship game, that conditional 2013 pick changes from a second-round pick to a first-round pick. If not, it stays second-round. Oakland’s previous starter, Jason Campbell, broke his collarbone and is out for the season, while high profile off-season pickup Terrelle Pryor isn’t ready to play.
