Before the opening game of the World Series, Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington joked that he couldn’t “match a wit” with notoriously cerebral and glum St. Louis Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa. That didn’t stop him from trying. During last night’s 3-2 victory by the Cards over the Rangers, Tony La Russa dipped into his bag of tricks early and often, with pinch-higger Allen Craig scoring an RBI single and the Cardinals’ bullpen employed skillfully to preserve the win for starter Chris Carpenter at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. The Cardinals have taken a 1-0 lead over the Texas Rangers, but seven games is a long series.
“Got to give them credit,” Washington said after the game. “They beat us. We didn’t give that game away tonight.”
La Russa’s tactical genius, and a blown call by the officials, gave the game to St. Louis. A ground ball hit by Adrian Beltre deflected off of the third-baseman’s foot into the field of play. Washington couldn’t sway the officials, in spite of the replays clearly showing what happened, and thus the ninth inning ended with the Rangers on the wrong side of the scoring deficit.
That’s okay, Wash. You’ve got six more games to catch up. Besides, after the death a fan at a Rangers game earlier this year, it’s a miracle this team didn’t fall apart, so all credit goes to Ron Washington for holding this team together.
