This has been a banner year for NFL records being tied or broken. First, you had Cam Newton breaking the rookie record for most yards thrown in his first game. Then, you had Sebastian Janikowski kicking a record-tying 63-yard field goal and Tom Brady throwing a 99-yard touchdown pass in the same weekend. Now, you’ve got Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints running wild on the hapless Indianapolis Colts. The Saints beat the Colts 62-7, tying an NFL record for most points scored in a game in the process. Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw for 5 touchdown passes.
“I was real proud of how we played tonight, how we handled the week of practice,” said Saints coach Sean Payton. “We spent a lot of time during the week just talking about us beginning to play our best football, because we really felt while we were 4-2, we hadn’t done that.”
It just doesn’t end for the Colts. Now 0-7, the Peyton Manning-less team from Indianapolis will be leaving the New Orleans Mercedez-Benz Superdown and returning home to the friendly confines of the RCA Dome, where they look to get on the winning path soon. This is the first time in 9 years that the Saints are guaranteed to have less than 10 wins, and the less said about the playoffs, the better Colts fans will feel.
Best keep holding out for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, Indiana.
