Last night was a banner night for Houston Cougars quarterback Case Keenum. The sixth-year senior (granted an extra year of eligibility for medical reasons after missing last season with a knee injury) is climbing all the NCAA career passing lists thanks to Houston’s prolific offense. Last night, Case Keenum threw a career-best 9 touchdowns as Houston beat Rice 73-34, and Keenum broke the NCAA FBS record for career touchdowns. Keenum’s 139 and counting topped former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell’s 134; Keenum is 267 yards shy of the career passing yards mark of 17,072 set by Hawaii’s former QB Tim Chang.
“Those are video-game numbers, something we couldn’t get stopped,” said Rice linebacker Justin Allen of Keenum’s 24/37 passes completed for 534 yards and 9 touchdowns versus 1 interception. “The rain slowed down a little bit … I wished it would have rained all game. It stopped, and they got things cranked up. There was no looking back for them.”
If you think Conference USA is a joke, think again. The new Mountain West/C-USA is going to be a very tough conference. Houston is 8-0 and ranked #17 in the country at the moment. Most importantly, Keenum kept the team in the game despite being down 17-7 in the first quarter, and he battled back to take the lead and close out the Rice Owls.
