Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, the scene of the espionage arrest.
When it comes to espionage, that’s a charge that the United States traditionally takes very seriously. Especially in the wake of the Wikileaks scandal, in which a US soldier leaked classified information online, the Army has been rooting out and cracking down on information leaks and espionage. Hence, a US Army soldier from Kentucky has been arrested on espionage charges. United States Army Specialist William Colton Millay was arrested on espionage charges by a joint task force in Alaska. He was stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a combined Army/Air Force base near Anchorage.
“Today’s arrest was the result of a close working relationship between the FBI and its military partners in Alaska,” said Mary Rook, special agent in charge of the FBI in Alaska. “Through this ongoing partnership, we are better able to protect our nation.”
Millay was arrested after a joint FBI/US Army Counterintelligence joint espionage investigation. Millay, 22, is from Owensboro, Kentucky, and was a member of the 164th Military Police Company, 793rd Military Police Battalion, 2nd Engineer Brigade. The investigation is ongoing, but FBI officials say the case is not related to the Wikileaks case. He will be tried in a military court, according to sources.
