Did you buy a Powerball ticket for last night’s drawing?  Did you buy it in Connecticut?  Did you pick the numbers 12-14-34-39-46 with the Powerball 36?  If that’s you, then congratulations!  You just won $245 million dollars.  One winning Powerball ticket was sold in Connecticut, netting some lucky person $245 million dollars in cash.  Hopefully they didn’t buy their lottery ticket somewhere embarrassing, like an adult video store.

I know that $245 million dollars seems like a lot of money, but how much does the winner really get?  Well, if they take the direct cash option, they get a check for $98 million dollars after taxes are taken out.  If they took the 30-year payment option, they’d get $5.5 million dollars after taxes for the next three decades.  That’s what the kids these days call a whole lot of money.

For those interested, the largest Powerball payout in history is $365 million dollars in 2006.  The odds of winning the jackpot for the top prize are 1:195 million, so stock up on lucky charms and try not to burn the house down in the process.
