Meet Miss World, the orphan who wanted to be a nun before she got hot.
Orphaned at 8 years old, Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colmenares spent the next five years of her life in a convent with other orphans, where she trained to become a nun. However, she didn’t end up there. Colmenares won Miss Venezula and now at age 22, Miss Venezuela Ivian Sarcos has become Miss World after winning the 2011 beauty pageant in London, England. Sarcos bested 113 other beauty queens in a contest that was watched by over 1 billion people in 150 different countries. She has become the 61st Miss World winner. This is the sixth win for a Venezuelan beauty queen at Miss World; the country has now become the all-time leader in Miss World production.
“I felt the most gorgeous woman in the world. I was so happy and I wanted to shout, to cry, to stand still and to smile. So many emotions. I’m incredibly happy for this moment, for this opportunity and for winning and I’m grateful with my life.” she told AFP. “Winning means everything to me and I hope to take advantage of being a winner in a productive manner. I first and foremost want to help people in need. I would like to help people like me. I am an orphan. I would also like to help the elderly and troubled teenagers. As many people as I can.”
Sarcos is more than just a beauty; she has a degree in human resources and works for a television broadcasting company. Sarcos was followed by Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais, who took second place. Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Perez, took home third in the contest, which was the 60th anniversary of Miss World’s first competition in London in 1951. Miss America did not make the finals.
