When it comes to movie franchises, this has been kind of a down year. Only two movies have debuted with over $100 million dollars in their opening weekend at the box office, and both of them are part of massively popular franchises. One of those, of course, was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The other, of course, is Twilight-related. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 debuted with a staggering $139.5 million dollars at the weekend box office, marking the second-highest Twilight film debut in the series.
The film’s weekend total was slightly behind The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which debuted with $142.8 million back in 2009, but there’s no complaining from Summit Entertainment, despite some estimates that said Breaking Dawn Part 1 could gross as much as $150 million on opening weekend. Despite a US opening on the lower end of the projected range, Breaking Dawn has been an instant hit around the world, raking in an extra $144 million in 54 countries due to its international launch.
“As we all know, as folks get older, the impulse to get out and be the first one to see the movie isn’t there,” admitted Summit domestic distribution chief Richie Fay, who adds that Breaking Dawn Part 1 is on pace for another $700 million around the world.
