"The cost of shipping live birds online is outrageous, so I had to go to Macy's!"
Every year, PNC Wealth Management compiles something they call the Christmas Price Index. What they do is take the old Christmas carol “The 12 Days of Christmas” and figure how much it would cost in real-world dollars to create that crazy scene in modern times. As that price goes up, so goes the price of Christmas. According to the new Christmas Price Index from by PNC Wealth Management, the cost of recreating the scene described in “The 12 Days of Christmas” now costs $101,119. That’s a 4.4% increase over 2010’s cost of $96,824; 2009’s recreation cost only $87,403.
“The story in general is wages are still a very sluggish part of this economy,” said Jim Dunigan, managing executive of investment for PNC Wealth Management.
According to Dunigan, the price of eight maids-a-milking at minimum wage was $58 — the same as in 2009. Other factors whose costs did not increase were the French hens, calling birds, gold rings, ladies dancing, and lords-a-leaping. The gold rings actually cost $5 less than last year; however, the cost of the seven swans a-swimming is now a staggering $6,300!
