When asked about the possibility of a rematch between top-ranked SEC champion LSU and one-loss SEC conference mate Alabama, BCS executive director Bill Hancock said, “Absolutely, if they’re 1 and 2, and they are in all the polls released today.” Oklahoma State may have destroyed Oklahoma to win the Big 12 championship, but it wasn’t enough to impress the coaches or the computers, as the BCS formula has chosen to make a rematch between the 12-0 LSU Tigers and 11-1 Alabama Crimson Tide the BCS National Championship Game for this year.
Earlier this season, LSU edged Alabama 9-6 in one of the best games of the year; now they’re doing it again with hardware on the line. Cue the tears from Big 12 fans. Honestly, they don’t have an argument; Alabama’s only loss was to the best team in the nation, not a 6-6 Iowa State Cyclones. Yes, OK State one their conference, but it was a down year for both Texas and Ohio State, and outside of those teams there’s not much to write home about in the Big 12 anymore.
As for the other bowl games, the complete 2011-12 college football bowl schedule has been released. This year is the first year in recent memory not to feature a non-BCS team in a BCS bowl game, with the other major bowls being filled out by traditional powers: Michigan vs. Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl; Clemson vs. West Virginia in the Orange Bowl; Oregon vs. Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl; and Oklahoma State versus Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl.
