In recent years, the Super Bowl halftime show has been a cavalcade of has-beens and classic rock acts. Aside from the semi-relevant Black Eyed Peas and Prince on two bad hips, there hasn’t been an interesting Super Bowl halftime act since Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson bared her breast to the world in the waning moments of a song. Well, the halftime show for Super Bowl XLVI just got interesting, thanks to the Material Girl. That’s right, Madonna is going to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, and you know it’s going to get weird.
How weird will it get? Madonna (who is currently promoting her film W.E.) will be teaming up with Cirque Du Soleil for her halftime performance. Aside from lots of spangly unitards and ribbons, what does that mean? It means we’re going to get dangerous levels of spectacle, even before you factor in cheerleaders. Once upon a time, the Super Bowl halftime show was something you could miss in favor of the Puppy Bowl, but now? Madonna might be able to make it interesting again.
Super Bowl XLVI will be taking place on February 5 in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the RCA Dome. Here’s hoping Madge doesn’t make any singing missteps like Christina Aguilera did last year.
