A 20-car convoy of supercars, like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Mercedes-Benz, were headed along the main interstate trunk in Honshu towards Hiroshima for a supercar exposition. They never made it to the car show. According to police, the Chugoku Expressway was wet from rain, thus it wasn’t optimum condition for an impromptu car race. The suspected-of-speeding drivers got a little out of control, and the result was a 14-car pile-up that may be the most expensive car wreck in history. Imagine Rowan Atkinson’s million-dollar wreck times about four.
The grand total of the wreck? At least $3.8 million dollars. There were three Mercedez, eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini, and a Toyota Prius all caught up in the wreck (the Prius wasn’t involved in the racing, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time). In Japan, luxury cars are a popular buy for young people, who save up their life’s savings to purchase the car of their dreams. I imagine there are a lot of shattered dreams and shattered racing red cars in driveways right now.
“I’ve never seen such a thing,” said highway patrol lieutenant Eiichiro Kamitani. “Ferraris rarely travel in such large numbers. Many of them were probably on their way to Hiroshima [. . . ] Speeding was possible but we have yet to determine the exact cause.”
To the credit of the cars, none of the 10 people injured received more than minor injuries.
