“Don’t try this at home.”
That’s the standard disclaimer aired during all sorts of television shows involving death-defying stunts and crazy science experiments. Shows of all types from Jackass to Man V. Wild to Mythbusters will pause during every episode to let the viewers at home know that professionals and experts have put all kinds of experience and scientific knowledge into setting up and preparing for the stunts they are about to perform. Or in the case of Jackass, at least bravado and a lack of common sense are fueling the stunt.
Maybe the folks at Mythbusters, a show so popular that even President Obama has appeared on it, should have taken their own advice after an experiment went way off course on Monday. An episode involving firing a cannon resulted in a miscalculation that sent a cannonball off course, directly penetrating all the way through a home and across another street before smashing a minivan’s window and coming to rest. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, but the hole in the wall in the photo above shows just some of the damage inflicted by the cannonball run. And yes, I just referenced a Burt Reynolds movie that should have featured carstaches.
It always looks like the show’s hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hynerman are having great fun blowing up things, but in this case, I’m guessing they had lots of explaining to do after the fact.
