In this economy, a lot of people have been forced to take a second job. Among them, authorities allege, is Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd. Federal authorities have arrested Bears WR Sam Hurd for trying to set up an illegal drug distribution network involving hundreds of pounds worth of cocaine and marijuana, with monetary values reaching into the hundreds of thousands of dollars per month. Hurd was arrested after meeting with an undercover narcotics agent in Chicago and accepting drugs.
“Sam wasn’t in meetings this morning and that’s how from there of course we started searching trying to find out why a player wouldn’t be here. There was no tipoff, didn’t know it was coming,” said Bears coach Lovie Smith. “No issues, no reason. I’m in shock over it. I never saw it coming. But just like I think I know most of you, you don’t really know what people do once you’re not with them. But I know that anyone we bring through here, we’ve had an extensive search to find out everything, if there is something out there, and that wasn’t the case. There was nothing we knew about Sam.”
Hurd was brought in from the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent in the off-season, and signed a three-year contract worth up to $5.15 million dollars. He was set to make about $685,000 in base salary this season; meanwhile, his drug business was set to run to about $700,000 per week. He was attempting to negotiate a supply of 5-10 kilos of cocaine and 1000 pounds of marijuana per week, at a price of $25,000 per kilo of coke and $450 per pound of marijuana. Hurd faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
Here’s my question: I know the average NFL career is short, but making the kind of money Hurd was making will set you up for life if you don’t waste it all. So, why was he wanting to become the drug kingpin of the NFL again? I know THAT makes even more/better money, but it just doesn’t seem worth jeopardizing your multi-million-dollar job for that.
