Gene Hackman as Popeye Doyle

In the movie The Royal Tenenbaums, Royal Tenenbaum takes his grandsons Ari and Uzi for a trip through the seedier parts of New York.  They jump on the back of a garbage truck to steal a ride, go to a cockfight, and generally have a great time.  Unsurprisingly, Gene Hackman has a little of that spirit about him in his real life, too.  For example, the 81-year-old actor was riding his bicycle on the Florida Keys on Friday.  The only problem is the car that bumped him from behind.  That’s right, a bicycling Gene Hackman was hit by a car, and all he suffered were some bumps and bruises.

Oh, he was airlifted to the hospital, but since it’s the Florida Keys, that’s pretty much the only way to get anywhere in a hurry.  According to his representative, Susan Madore, Hackman underwent routine tests after his accident, but he was given a clean bill of health:  “He’s suffered minor bumps and bruises and is already on his way home,” quoth the press rep.

Y’know, I hope when I’m an 81-year-old with two Oscars and three Golden Globes to my name I’ll be in good enough shape to bicycle around the Florida Keys, then laugh off getting hit by a freaking car (or even an antelope).  Then again, Gene Hackman was a Marine, and Marines are very tough.
