Eli Manning celebrates his second Super Bowl berth.
In 2008, the New York Giants and Eli Manning needed a miracle catch from David Tyree to disrupt the New England Patriots and Tom Brady’s attempt to go 19-0 and win a Super Bowl title to become the best professional football team of all time. Super Bowl XLVI is going to look an awful lot like Super Bowl XLII, albeit without the shot at greatness on the line. New York and New England will be meeting in the Super Bowl for the second time in 5 years. New England topped the Baltimore Ravens on a last-second field goal miss by Billy Cundiff and New York topped the San Francisco 49ers after a fumbled punt in overtime to cement places in Super Bowl XLVI.
The NFC and AFC championships were pretty thrilling affairs. New England’s game was won at the last second and New York’s game went into overtime and had multiple possessions before the two contests ended. New England beat Baltimore 23-20; the Giants beat San Francisco 20-17. Neither game was particularly good, as you don’t like a game to end with a goat versus a hero, but any last second game is pretty thrilling. Still, you have to feel bad for 49ers special teamer Kyle Williams (filling in for an injured Ted Ginn Jr.) and Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff (who missed a gimme 32-yard field goal).
Throw your helmets into the stands in celebration, guys! Better yet, don’t do that; that’s crazy.
