Sometimes, you have to play fashion police to get something done. In the case of Pottstown Middle School, part of a suburban Philadelphia school system, the key in this case was the ubiquity and size of the Uggs worn by the students. Pottstown Middle School banned Ugg boots because students were hiding cell phones in them. Say what you want to about Crocs, and I hate those safety hazards, but they’re not used for smuggling contraband so that’s one thing they have over Uggs in the classroom.
The ban was requested by the principal at Pottstown Middle, said Superintendent Reed Lindley, “because of the classroom disruptions that are resulting from ringing cell phones.” Students can still wear boots that lace up, but laceless sheepskin things like the beloved Uggs are now forbidden.
It’s a really sad testament to the world we live in when local governments and school systems have to be parents and force children to dress like they’re going out in public. Furry boots are all well and good, and they’re a step up from pajamas in public, but they’re usually so hideously ugly that I don’t see why anyone would want to wear them, especially teenagers.
