Well, apparently something went wrong with the first season of Simon Cowell’s The X-Factor, because in the wake of the first season the axe is falling early and often around Cowell’s offices. The show launched with many people, Steve Jones, L.A. Reid, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and Cowell himself; now, three out of those five have been fired. Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and Steve Jones are all gone from the X-Factor for various reasons.
For Jones, he just didn’t connect with the American audiences. For Scherzinger, she wanted to focus on her music career and was a bit of a diva behind the scenes. For Abdul, well… who knows why she got fired? Either way, I think Cowell and company are a bit desperate to save the show, which faces stiff competition from a renewed American Idol and the continuing power of America’s Got Talent, which lost its main judge and somehow improved.
“There’s no doubt that there’s reality-competition fatigue right now. … It’s almost like there’s just too many types of these shows on the air, and it’s basically year-round,” said Michael Slezak of TVline.com. “They’ve got to convince people that it’s worth investing their whole fall to watching it and convince people that they’ve changed enough to deserve a second chance. Now they’re up against it, and the fact that it wasn’t a huge phenomenon like ‘American Idol’ makes it easier to ignore.”
