It was a Super Bowl halftime show for the ages. In the interim between the first and second halves of what was a pretty spectacular game, Madonna took to a giant lighted video stage with a horde of shirtless Spartan attendants, cheerleaders, a choir, dancers, acrobats, a gigantic glittery flying dove, and a massive amount of celebrity guests. Madonna performed with LMFAO, Cee-lo Green, Nicki Minaj, and most famously, British rapper M.I.A. It was this last guest appearance that caused controversy, as MIA flipped the bird during her brief appearance on the Super Bowl stage and NBC couldn’t cut away from it in time.
“The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show,” said a buck-passing NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey. “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.”
During a performance of Madonna’s new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin,” M.I.A. at one point said the phrase “I don’t give a…” and then punctuated the phrase with a middle finger, albeit only for a few seconds. Of course she hadn’t done it in rehearsals, so no one expected someone go to off-script during the biggest event of their career when their nerves are about to make them sick. These things happen. I didn’t even notice it during the show, and I was watching live.
The Super Bowl appearance was Madonna’s biggest crowd ever, thanks to the live audience, the nationwide appearance on NBC, and a simulcast on Sirius XM.
