Malachy is a paragon of smushy-faced beauty.
It’s hard for someone like myself to say that one dog breed is better than another, especially when we’re talking about the best of the best. The sort of dog that wins the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the kind of dog that is way out of my league. From the Scottish Deerhound that won last year to the Scottish Terrier that took the title the year before, pretty much every dog that wins the dog show in Madison Square Garden is an awesome-looking dog. But not this year. This year’s winner has a flopping pink tongue, beady black eyes, and a smashed-in little face hidden in a ball of fluff. Malachy, a 4-year-old Pekingese, took the top prize of Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show for 2012.
“He saved all his energy for the ring today,” said handler and co-owner David Fitzpatrick. “No other dog moves like this.”
The ugliest dog in the competition came out on top, and it’s not even useful ugly like those drooly dogs with all the wrinkles. It’s ornamental ugly! Sigh. Granted, Malachy has a lot of personality (he was described by Judge Cindy Vogels as “a lot of dog in a small package”), but seriously. I hate this dog breed, and to see it pick up the top prize is kind of sad. This is only the fourth time a Pekingese won top prize in America, and it’s the first Peke win since 1990.
