It's like sucking on a TV remote full of poison; what can go wrong?
Once you start smoking, it’s very difficult to quit. A few cigarettes a day can quickly become a dangerous habit, so it’s best to never start. However, once you do start, quitting aids like nicotine gum and those new electronic cigarettes can help. Electronic cigarettes are those little cigarette-shaped things with the light in one end that puffs nicotine-laced air into your lungs when you suck on it. They’re usually pretty safe, but not in one case. Tom Holloway, a 57-year-old man from Niceville, Florida, lost a chunk of his tongue and several teeth after his electronic cigarette blew up in his mouth.
“The best analogy is like it was trying to hold a bottle rocket in your mouth when it went off,” said Joseph Parker of the North Bay Fire Department, who responded to the accident. “The battery flew out of the tube and set the closet on fire.”
Holloway also suffered severe facial burns in the explosion. He’s recovering at a hospital in Mobile, Alabama. Presumably, while there, he’ll take great pains to avoid the smoking lounge just in case any nearby cigarettes explode in someone’s mouth while he’s there.
