Forget about Moneyball, the game-changing baseball philosophy that values getting men on base over defensive metrics, speed, body type, or other traditional tools lusted over by scouts. The Oakland A’s are going to experience first hand the power of Mannyball. Manny Ramirez, the long-haired slugger last seen with the Tampa Bay Rays last season before retiring abruptly in April after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, is making a comeback in Oakland.
“I am very pleased Billy was able to add Manny to our team,” said A’s owner Lew Wolff via email. “I look forward to welcoming him and the entire team that Billy and his people have assembled for the coming season.”
Of course, Manny isn’t guaranteed to make his Major League Baseball comeback. His contract, a one-year $500,ooo affair, is contingent upon him making the team’s major league roster. It’s also prorated, meaning that Manny won’t get paid for his upcoming 50-game suspension for PEDs that he earned in his last season in baseball. Yes, he’ll be serving that drug suspension before he can even consider returning to the pros, but the Oakland GM is betting that a few months of Manny will be worth the headaches; after all, it’s not like his team can get much worse.
I kind of have my doubts, since Manny wasn’t exactly fellow drug suspendee Ryan Braun in his last appearance in baseball, but we’ll see how this works out.
