“Nothing makes me prouder than coming home with six Grammys, then coming to the BRITs and winning album of the year. I’m so proud to be British and to be flying the flag and I’m so proud to be in the room with all of you,” said Adele.
Then presenter James Corden stepped in, interrupting the British music industry’s biggest star in her biggest moment. That’s right, Adele just won the award of the year and then some tool in a suit stepped in to move the show along. Probably not the best move. Adele naturally flips out and then flips off the assembled recording industry suits with an upraised middle finger.
Cue the manufactured outrage, as if no one’s seen a middle finger before. Given how boring everyone says the BRITs were during ITV’s dreadful, commercial-packed broadcast, maybe Adele was right to spice the proceedings up with a little bit of crass, rock-and-roll attitude. Or maybe you just don’t cut off your only real star, and one of the few people still able to sell records in this era of digital downloads, because they’ve earned the right to talk for a few minutes after winning Best British Album.
