Soggy conditions made Daytona 500 history yesterday.
Eight times previously, the Daytona 500 has endured a rain delay that interfered with its running. The last rain delay was 2009. However, in the 54-year history of the race, the Daytona 500 has never been delayed a full day, until yesterday. Yesterday’s scheduled Daytona 500 was pushed back to today at noon thanks to storms and rainy conditions at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.
“This is one of the toughest things for us drivers,” said 500 pole-sitter Carl Edwards. “It’s now who can really stay focused. That’s not just the drivers, that’s the pit crews, the crew chiefs, everyone, the officials. But I think we’ll be just fine.”
While drivers got a reprieve yesterday, the rain is expected to continue today, which means that the Daytona 500 will be a waiting game yet again. However, one thing NASCAR officials are pretty adamant about is that the race will happen today, one way or another. Nobody wants a car wreck, and God forbid anyone get killed in the process, but NASCAR really wants a Monday 500 to be the extent of the delays. A Tuesday 500 or Wednesday running of the Great American Race is unthinkable.
