For 45-year-old Christopher Alan Carlson, there was a problem he wanted to solve. His three grandchildren, ages 8, 9, and 12, were fat. So, he had a solution: hikes in the great outdoors. Unfortunately for Christopher Alan Carlson’s grandkids, his idea of a hike was a 15-mile death march without food, water, or breaks to rest. Also, he hit, choked, and otherwise abused his grandkids during the treks, which were so bad that the children were throwing up, having cramps, and falling.
“I needed medical attention and I was hurting, and he was hitting and pushing me and calling me fat,” said the 12-year old boy, who secretly asked a fellow passing hiker to call emergency services during the so-called hike. “I was scared and it was hard and I was all weak and tired and kind of hurt.”
There are some pretty nebulous cases of child abuse, such as the bong baby, and then there’s legitimate, life-threatening abuse. This could have easily been a fatal hike for the kids, even if it’s not exactly hiking the Appalachian Trail while blind. All parties involved are lucky those kids didn’t die, especially if they’re out of shape and trying to hike without adequate food and water.
