Go ahead, call Jason Varitek an idiot. He is an idiot, one of the biggest and most important idiots in Boston Red Sox history. The Idiots are what the players called themselves on Boston’s 2004 World Series championship team that broke Boston’s epic championship curse. Now, another link to those teams is gone. After 15 seasons behind the plate, Boston catcher Jason Varitek is retiring from Major League Baseball.
“You have not only been our captain, you have been our rock,” said Red Sox chairman Tom Werner at Varitek’s retirement press conference. “You have personified the rugged, aggressive, fiercely competitive style of play that has characterized our club during your tenure.”
Indeed, the Red Sox were never as successful as they were with Varitek on the roster, in spite of the team’s recent struggles. He caught four no-hitters, won two World Series championships, and even made three All-Star teams during his 14 years at Boston, and he was one of the key players throughout the team’s run of greatness in the 2000’s. Fans and teammates loved him, and when you’re loved in Boston, you’re doing something very right because they hate a lot of people that play for their sports teams.
