Lionel Messi is the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, so it’s not terribly surprising that he’d be a good soccer player, yet here we are discussing Messi’s greatness. Why? Well, Messi scored five goals in a 7-1 drubbing of Bayer Leverkusen in yesterday’s Champions League game. It wasn’t as if he was squaring off against scrubs, either; the Champions League is for the top clubs in Europe and those that make it are in the top flight of their respective national leagues!
“I’m lucky to coach and manage this player. He is the best. There’s no one else. He is a unique player because of his innate talent and also for his competitiveness,” said Barcelona’s manager, Pep Guardiola. “We will not see another player like Messi. It’s not easy to score five goals, and one day he will score six. The throne is his. Only he will decide when to leave it.”
If that seems like high praise, that’s because it is. And that is because it is warranted. No one had ever scored 5 goals in a Champions League game until Messi did it, breaking a scoring record in the process. Messi is also the first person to score four or more in two Champions League games, and he has a staggering 14 goals in his last 5 games for both his team and his national team. Simply put, there’s a reason these guys make a lot of money.
