Johnny Depp is Tonto, and Armie Hammer is the Lone Ranger.

There hasn’t been a leaked trailer yet, but we do have our first image from an upcoming summer blockbuster.  Granted, the movie has to come out to be considered a blockbuster, but it’s Armie Hammer (of The Social Network fame), Johnny Depp (of Pirates of the Carribbean fame), and Jerry Bruckheimer (of Top Gun 2 fame) coming together to handle one title.  It’s the world’s first look at the costumes from the upcoming Lone Ranger movie (a reboot of the 50’s western).  Armie Hammer plays the Ranger, while Johnny Depp takes on the role of Tonto in this new take on the classic.

“I remember watching it as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?'” said Depp, who claims part Cherokee ancestry, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.  “I liked Tonto, even at that tender age, and knew Tonto was getting the unpleasant end of the stick here.  That’s stuck with me.  And when the idea came up (for the movie), I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to . . . reinvent the relationship.”

I have to own up to really liking this idea, personally.  After all, isn’t Tonto the character that sticks with everyone as the coolest one from The Lone Ranger TV show?  It’s about time he become the real hero of the story, or at least an equal partnership.  Hopefully, this version will have a better face than Seth Rogen’s reboot of The Green Hornet.
