The rumors have proven to be true. That next-generation iPad people have been talking about has finally been given a release date. It’s almost time, so get in line now and beat the rush. The iPad HD (AKA the iPad 3) is coming on March 16. That means in a week, you’ll be seeing lines at your local Apple Store and the hype will be deafening. In fact, let’s listen to some of that hype right now, shall we?
“We are taking it to a whole new level and are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad,” said Apple CEO and Jobs replacement Tim Cook.
So why is it the iPad HD rather than the iPad 3? Well, for one, Apple hates giving numerical values to its things. That’s why the iPod redesign was the iPod Nano, why the operating systems are all named OSX: Big Cat rather than OS 10.5 or whatever, and why the iPad 3 was renamed to the iPad HD. There’s another reason for the rename: the iPad HD’s screen has 2048-by-1536 pixels in its display. Your HD television has only 1920-by-1080 pixels. The iPad HD’s Retina Display is SHARPER than HD!
Of course, it’s still about a fifth of the size of a standard television, and only a tiny fraction of a home theater system, so all that sharpness only serves to make up for the tablet’s lack of size. Still, it’s a pretty good portable television and passport replacement.
