Women’s basketball gets a bad rap. After all, it’s basically men’s basketball but without slam dunks, yet people seem to use it as the butt of convenient jokes. While you might not want to mention that to someone like Brittney Griner or the UConn women’s team, the recent state championship game between Eugene Willamette High and Springfield High in Oregon has set the game of basketball back 100 years. Springfield beat Willamette by a final score of 16-7 in the 5A girls state championship.
“We don’t care how we did it, we just won it,” admitted Springfield girls basketball coach Bill Wagner. “They did what they felt they needed to do and our kids had great composure with that.”
Willamette felt that they couldn’t run with Springfield, so they decided to do the opposite of running. That’s right, Willamette ran stall plays throughout the entire game, which consisted of them simply standing around with the basketball. Not for possessions, either; Willamette held the ball for the entire second quarter, waiting until 6 seconds left to try and score. The final score for the first half of the game was 4-0 in favor of Springfield!
