Brandon Marshall’s list of transgressions with the law is even more impressive than his NFL stats, and his NFL stats are pretty impressive. Marshall is one of the top wide receivers in the NFL at the moment. He’s got the NFL record for most receptions in a game (21) and he’s only one of five wide receivers in NFL history to catch 100 passes in three consecutive seasons. He’s also got multiple arrests for domestic violence, assault, DUI, disorderly conduct… you name it. It is this unique combination of talent and risk that puts Brandon Marshall in the news today. Brandon Marshall was traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Chicago Bears on Tuesday; Marshall was arrested on assault charges from an incident that happened at a night club on Sunday.
Christin Myles was celebrating her birthday at a nightclub in New York City when she left the upper floor around 4 AM. When she came back, she found a member of her group of friends was squared off with NFL star Brandon Marshall. Somehow, Marshall ended up punching Myles in the eye.
Predictably, Marshall’s attorney Harvey Steinberg tells a different story: “Brandon Marshall was the key note speaker at a charitable event in New York. After the event was over he, his wife and close friends attended a function at a local club. While at the function a fight broke out NOT involving Mr. Marshall or his friends.” Steinberg added that Marshall’s wife was hit in the face with a thrown bottle at the nightclub and needed medical attention for her injuries.
Here’s the key question, given the timing. Did the Dolphins know that Marshall was facing legal troubles and that’s why they traded him away for bargain-basement prices? It’s pretty suspicious, all things considered. It remains to be seen how this will play itself out; after the Sam Hurd Scarface incident, I imagine the Bears will be pressing the league to overturn this trade, no matter how much Jay Cutler needs the help.
