Calvin Johnson is one of the best wide receivers in football history, and now he’s getting paid like it.  Calvin Johnson is a physical marvel, thanks to his incredible speed and the fact that he’s 6’4 and can leap out of the stadium.  His unique combination of size, speed, and skills have translated to NFL success, as Johnson caught 96 passes for 1681 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2011, and now it’s time to get paid.  Detroit signed Calvin Johnson to an 8-year, $132-million-dollar contract.

That’s a record contract high for a wide receiver; thanks to the $60 million guarantee, it’s also the highest amount of guaranteed money given to ANY player in NFL history.  That said, if anyone is worthy of a record contract, it’s Calvin Johnson.  Those 16 touchdowns are insane, and since Detroit has a young, talented quarterback, why not sign a long-term deal for a young, talented wide receiver with a good 10 years left in his playing career?

“That deal is signed, right?” said Lions coach and amateur MMA fighter Jim Schwartz.  Teased Schwartz, “I’d have had held out for money, Calvin.”
