It took the better part of four years, but beleaguered New York Knicks head coach had finally found a point guard in NYC who could actually run his vaunted “7-seconds-or-less” uptempo offense. Then, the team’s very expensive small forward and ball stopper came back from injury. Mike D’Antoni just isn’t going to put up with it anymore, which is why he resigned suddenly. That’s right, Mike D’Antoni abruptly quit as head coach of the New York Knicks, ending years of frustration for all involved.
“You know what, I think at that point in time we started to play well and he started to build on that offense,” said forward Amare Stoudemire of the team’s brief resurgence under point guard Jeremy Lin. “He (D’Antoni) had a certain ideal of a system we were supposed to implement. We all didn’t quite buy into it, and he got frustrated and I think that’s why he took his way out.”
So what’s next for the Knicks, aside from more losing under interim head coach Mike Woodson? Well, there are a lot of unemployed coaches out there, but only one played for the New York Knicks as a player and only one guy has more championship rings than anyone. That would be Phil Jackson, last seen in the LA Lakers NBA Finals loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Surely Phil would want to get that taste out of his mouth while rescuing his hometown team from the incompetence of the current front office.
